The Director of Tax will be responsible for end-to-end tax leadership across all jurisdictions in which Cyclic Materials operates or plans to operate. This role will design and execute tax strategies that support rapid growth, cross-border operations, capital raises, and government incentives, while ensuring full compliance with applicable tax laws.

This is a hands-on leadership role suited for someone who can operate strategically while still diving into technical detail when needed.

Key Responsibilities

Global Tax Strategy & Planning

  • Develop and implement a global tax strategy aligned with Cyclic Materials’ business objectives, growth plans, and ESG mission.
  • Advise on tax implications of:
    • New country entries (Europe, APAC)
    • Legal entity structuring
    • Supply chain and transfer pricing models
    • M&A, joint ventures, and strategic partnerships
  • Optimize effective tax rate while maintaining a strong risk and governance posture.

Canadian Tax Responsibilities

  • Oversee compliance for:
    • Corporate income tax
    • Sales and indirect taxes (GST/HST/QST/PST)
    • Payroll and employer taxes
  • Lead tax planning related to:
    • SR&ED and other innovation incentives
    • Clean technology and sustainability-related tax credits
  • Manage CRA audits, reviews, and correspondence.
  • Monitor changes in Canadian tax legislation impacting manufacturing, cleantech, and cross-border operations.

U.S. Tax Responsibilities

  • Oversee U.S. federal, state, and local income tax compliance.
  • Manage U.S. indirect taxes, including sales and use tax.
  • Advise on U.S. entity structuring, nexus, and permanent establishment considerations.
  • Lead planning around:
    • Transfer pricing
    • Withholding taxes
    • Cross-border financing and IP arrangements
  • Coordinate IRS and state tax audits.

International Tax Responsibilities

  • Lead international tax planning for operations outside Canada and the U.S.
  • Manage:
    • Transfer pricing policies and documentation
    • OECD BEPS considerations
    • Pillar Two / global minimum tax exposure (as applicable)
  • Advise on customs duties, VAT/GST, and withholding taxes.
  • Support international expansion from a tax-efficient and compliant perspective.

Financial Reporting & Governance

  • Own tax provision and reporting under IFRS and/or US GAAP.
  • Ensure accurate tax disclosures and reserves.
  • Establish and maintain strong tax controls and documentation.
  • Partner closely with Finance, Legal, Operations, and external advisors.

Leadership & Stakeholder Management

  • Act as the internal tax subject-matter expert for senior leadership.
  • Manage and coordinate external tax advisors in Canada, the U.S., and internationally.
  • Build scalable tax processes and, over time, a high-performing internal tax function.
  • Support Board-level and investor discussions on tax risk and strategy.

Qualifications & Experience

Required

  • 10+ years of progressive tax experience, including multijurisdictional tax leadership
  • Deep expertise in Canadian and US tax
  • Strong international tax knowledge, including transfer pricing
  • Experience in manufacturing, industrials, cleantech, mining, energy, or similar asset-heavy sectors
  • CPA, CA, designation (JD/LLM in Tax an asset)
  • Experience working with Big 4 or top-tier tax advisory firms (either currently or previously) will be an advantage.

Preferred

  • Experience supporting high-growth or pre-IPO companies
  • Familiarity with government incentives and clean-tech related tax credits
  • Prior in-house tax leadership experience
  • Exposure to global minimum tax regimes (OECD Pillar Two)
